Cambria's Extra-Inning Heroics Helps Colonels Complete Elizabethtown Sweep 4-3
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. –
Jacob Cambria's (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) walk-off single in the tenth inning lifted the Wilkes University baseball team to a 4-3 come from behind victory over Elizabethtown College at Bruggeworth Field Monday night, completing the series sweep.
Wilkes improves to 9-4 overall with a 3-0 record in Landmark play, while Elizabethtown falls to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The visitors opened the scoring in the third and took a 3-0 lead with a single to left center in the fourth inning. The Colonels rallied in the fifth inning, with
Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) putting the team on the board with a towering solo home run to left field.
Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) doubled a few at-bats later to drive home
Matthew Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights), and Loch was driven home after
Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) doubled to left field to tie the game at three.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Colonels kept the game alive after
Evan Melberger (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) and Spencer gunned down the potential winning run at the plate. Then in extra innings, Cambria's single to left field with the bases loaded sent the Wilkes faithful home happy with the win.
Hunter Lawall (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) (1-0) picked up the victory, getting the final out of the tenth inning.
Ethan Grodack (Lake Ariel, PA/Western Wayne) allowed only three hits through 5.1 innings of relief. At the plate, Spencer led the team as the only Colonel with a multi-hit game going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Alex Perrin and Sawyer Martin led the Blue Jays with three hits each. Cory Rible (0-1) was given the loss on the mound.
The Colonels return to Bruggeworth Field on Wednesday, March 19 for a non-conference matchup against Penn State Harrisburg. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
