Second Half Drought Dooms Wilkes Men's Lacrosse in 18-5 Defeat at Alvernia
READING, PA – Host Alvernia University broke open the game scoring six unanswered goals over the second half on way to an 18-5 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team on Wednesday night.
Wilkes fell to 2-6 overall on the season while Alvernia improved to 5-1 on the year following the home victory.
The Colonels opened the game strong taking a 2-0 lead with goals from
Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) and Anthony Delduca three minutes into the first quarter. Delduca struck first at 13:32 on an unassisted goal followed by S. Sosnovik notching his 11
th tally of the season thanks to an assist from brother
Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) at 12:51.
Alvernia responded with five straight goals over the next six minutes to take a 5-3 advantage before S. Sosnovik posted his second goal of the first quarter off an assist from Delduca to cut the Golden Wolves lead to two. Alvernia added one more goal to finish the first stanza leading 6-3 after 15 minutes of play.
Tim Hartka (Phoenix, MD/Calvert Hall) kept Wilkes at pace scoring his 12
th goal of the season as the Colonels trailed 6-4 with 12:40 left in the first half. Three more Alvernia goals pushed the lead to 9-4 before
Jackson Casper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) scored unassisted to keep the Golden Wolves within four goals. Alvernia then finished the half with a 3-0 run to take a 12-5 advantage to the break.
The hosts then scored two goals in the third quarter and four more in the fourth not allowing a Wilkes goal over the final 30 minutes of play to secure the 18-5 home non-conference victory.
Alvernia held a 49-21 shot advantage while claiming 45 ground balls to Wilkes' 23. The Golden Wolves were also a perfect 25-for-25 on clearing attempts while the Colonels finished 18-for-24.
Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) finished with 11 saves in net for Wilkes playing all 60 minutes.
Charles Oberman led all Alvernia scorers with a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists.
Wilkes returns to Landmark Conference play on Saturday when the Colonels host Moravian University for a 1:00 p.m. matchup at Schmidt Stadium.
