Wilkes Softball Splits Mid-Week Doubleheader with Immaculata University

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Paige Randazzo's (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) double in the eighth inning of game two helped the Wilkes University softball team to a series split at Immaculata University on Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-2 in game one but winning 6-5 in game two.

Wilkes improves to 5-4 on the year, while Immaculata fall to 6-4 overall.

In game one, the Mighty Macs took the lead in the fourth inning with a single to right field, followed by two more runs in the fifth. The Colonels didn't go down without a fight, as Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) blasted a two-run home run to left field to close the gap to one. In the end, Wilkes couldn't complete to comeback and fell 3-2.

Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (1-2) took the loss pitching 5 2/3 innings allowing eight hits and three runs with five strikeouts. Stafursky led Wilkes at the plate with a multi-hit game, going two for three with two RBIs.

Riece Onorato (2-1) picked up the win allowing two runs in a complete game effort. Allison Hill led the hosts offense going two for three with two RBIs of her own.

Butka opened game two with a home run to left center field, with Kayla Burleson (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) scoring on an error to double the lead in the top of the first. The Macs responded with one run in the first and tied it with another in the fourth. In the fifth inning, Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) drove home a run with a double to left field to give the Colonels a 3-2 lead. Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) brought home Abby Cruz (Dallas, PA/Dallas) on a groundout to shortstop, followed by a Stafursky single that drove in the third run of the inning to give Wilkes a 5-2 lead.

Immaculata tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Randazzo's pinch hit double to right field brought home Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) to reclaim the Colonel lead. In the bottom of the eighth, the Macs left two on base as the Colonel defense held on to take the victory 6-5.

Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) (3-1) took the win, pitching four innings and allowing three runs (one earned) with two strikeouts. Five Colonels had multi-hit games with Stafursky leading the team once again, going three for four with an RBI.

Emma Mercadante (3-1) took the loss for Immaculata, allowing one run (unearned) through four innings. Rylee Martin led the team at the plate going two for three with a home run.

Wilkes hosts their first games at the Ralston Athletic Complex this Saturday, March 22, hosting Drew University for a Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
