Wilkes Softball Sweep Drew in Saturday Doubleheader to Open Landmark Play

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Wilkes softball team opened Landmark play on Saturday against Drew, defeating the Rangers in both games of the doubleheader to begin conference play at 2-0.

Game 1 | Wilkes 4, Drew 3 (8 innings)

A walk off single by Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) in the eighth inning that brought Allyson Stafursky (Eynon, PA/Valley View) home secured the 4-3 victory for the Colonels.

Drew initially took the early lead in the top of the first with Olivia Magliacano scoring off a fly out to right field and Hailey Meierhofer scored off a ground out to second. The Colonels responded with the equalizers in the third inning with Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) scoring off a single to right center field by Paige Randazzo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Boyd recorded Wilkes' second run off a single down the right field line by Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge). 

The game remained even, with Drew scoring first in the eighth inning with Magliacano recording the run for the rangers. The Colonels answered in the bottom of the eighth with Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) scoring the tying run off a single down the right field line by Maddy Maloney (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and got the winning run with Boyd's walk off single. 

In the circle, Butka pitched a complete game, picking up her third win of the season and recording a 1.75 earned run average. 
 

Game 2 | Wilkes 2, Drew 0

Wilkes' momentum continued into the second game of the day, with the Colonels scoring two unanswered runs in the third inning.

The Colonel's two runs of the day came in the bottom of the third with Hana Cross (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) scoring off a single through the left side and Talia Piragas (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) scored off a fly out to center field by Randazzo. The game concluded after the top of the seventh, with the Rangers unable to score any runs. 

Piragas, Butka, Dougher, Stafursky, Boyd and Cross all recorded hits for the Colonels in game two and Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle, pitching a complete game and recording three strikeouts.

The Colonels will be back at home on Wednesday, March 26, for a doubleheader against Penn State Berks with the first game beginning at 4 p.m.
