Come From Behind Wins Lift Wilkes Baseball Over Catholic in Saturday Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilkes baseball team defeated Catholic in the first two games of their weekend series against the Cardinals, increasing their overall record to 13-7 and their conference record to 7-2.

 

Game 1 | Wilkes 10, Catholic 9

After 11 innings, the Colonels came away with the win against the Cardinals in the first game of the series against Catholic. Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) scored the first run of the day in the top of the first after Matt Show reached first on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Catholic answered in the bottom of the first with two runs to take the early lead. The Cardinals added a third run in the second to get up 3-1 heading into the third inning. Mathis added his second run of the day in the top of the third off a triple to right center by Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas). 

The Cardinals added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to give Catholic a 6-2 lead before Jimmy Brazofsky (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to cut the deficit to three runs. Catholic added a seventh run in the bottom of the sixth and Wilkes added runs by Trehnon Hugo (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing) and Matt Show off a single up the middle by Andres Cruz (Wayne, PA/Radnor) in the eighth and a home run by Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) followed in the ninth, bringing home Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) to bring the score to 8-7 with the Colonels taking the lead. 

Catholic tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th inning, Mathis scored off a single to right center by Tyler Uram (Carbondale Twp, PA/Lakeland) and Uram scored off a hit by Hunter Lawall (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area). The Cardinal were only able to add one run in the bottom of the 11th, giving Wilkes the win for game one. 

Lawall picked up the win on the mound for the Colonels, pitching three innings and recording two strikeouts while giving up two hits on two runs. 

 

Game 2 | Wilkes 5, Catholic 3

The Colonels scored all five of their runs in the seventh and eighth innings to complete another come from behind in their second game against Catholic this afternoon. The Cardinals recorded their runs in the first and fifth innings, with two home runs that brought in their three runs of the game. 

The Colonels then answered in the seventh inning, with Hugo recording Wilkes' first run off a single to left field by Spencer. Spencer then scored a run of his own shortly after when Cambia reached first on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Gavin Lacoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) singled to center field, allowing Cruz and Matt Show to reach home, rounding out the runs for the seventh inning. 

Loch scored the final run of the day for the Colonels in the top of the eighth off a double down the left field line by Spencer to secure Wilkes with their second come from behind win of the day. 

Zachary Lloyd (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) pitched a complete game and picked up the win for the Colonels, recording five strikeouts while giving up three runs on six hits. 

The Colonels conclude their series against the Cardinals tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. in Washington D.C.
