Late Surge Powers Oswego State over Wilkes Baseball
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University baseball team fell to Oswego State in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon, as a four-run eighth inning by the Lakers sunk the Colonels 6-2 at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes falls to 5-4 on the year while Oswego improves to 2-3 overall.
Oswego scored the opening run in the third inning, scoring on a throwing error trying to catch Joe McLaughlin stealing third base. Pitcher
AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) then got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the score 1-0.
The Colonels loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, with
Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) scoring the team's first run after being hit by a pitch. In the next at bat,
Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) gave Wilkes the lead after grounding out to third base allowed
Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) to score.
The Lakers offense took control in the eighth inning, driving in two runs with a bases-loaded double to take a 3-2 lead. They added to it later in the inning with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-2, adding one more in the ninth claim the 6-2 victory.
Caleb Graham (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) (0-1) was responsible for the bases-loaded situation in the eighth, taking his first loss of the season.
Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area),
Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights), and
Gavin Lacoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) shared a team-high two hits each, with Mathis picking up a late triple in the ninth inning. Spencer and Luksic each had one RBI. Starting pitcher
AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) pitched five innings allowing one unearned run two hits with five strikeouts.
Jonah Shearer (1-1) picked up the win for Oswego allowing three hits in three innings with two strikeouts. At the plate, Felix De Asa Delacruz led the Lakers with two hits and two RBIs.
Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday, March 11 as they travel to face The College of New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
