Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Defeated at Susquehanna
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A 10-goal first quarter lifted Susquehanna over the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team at Sassafras Field on Saturday afternoon, as the Colonels fell 24-10 in a Landmark Conference contest.
Wilkes falls to 4-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play, while Susquehanna improves to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in Landmark play.
Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) opened the scoring for Wilkes on the helper from
Tim Hartka (Phoenix, MD/Calvert Hall) to tie the game at one after the River Hawks netted the day's first goal. The hosts then scored nine more in the first frame to take a 10-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Wilkes found the back of the net again in the second quarter as
Matthew Rotolo (Long Island, NY/St. John the Baptist) scored following two Susquehanna goals to make it a 12-2 contest. The Colonels scored twice more before the break, as
Anthony DelDuca (Westchester, NY/Westlake) scored to break up a five-goal run by the River Hawks and
Oscar Cline (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) scored with less than a minute remaining to send the game to halftime with the score 18-4.
The Colonels continued the goalscoring momentum into the third quarter as
Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) and S. Sosnovik struck in succession to cut the deficit to 18-6. S. Sosnovik completed his hat trick to close the third quarter scoring after two River Hawk goals to send the game into the fourth down 20-7.
S. Sosnovik scored two more goals in the final frame of action while Rotolo netted his second of the day, but the River Hawks scored four goals of their own to take the 24-10 victory.
S. Sosnovik led the Colonels with a career-best five goals on a team-high six shots on goal, while DelDuca and Cline led the team with two assists each. Defensively,
Mac Jackson (Long Valley, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) led the team with four ground balls and six Colonels registered a caused turnover. In goal,
Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) was given the decision with 21 saves in 45 minutes of play, while
Nicholas DeVitis (Conshohocken, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) made four saves in the final quarter of play.
Chris Ciccarello led the River Hawks with five goals and seven shots on goal. Alexander Messina led the team with seven ground balls, while Augie Granatelli picked up the win in goal.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday, April 16 for their final road game of the season against the University of Scranton at 6:00 p.m.
