Wilkes Baseball Defeats DeSales in Midweek Matchup
CENTER VALLEY, PA - The Wilkes baseball team defeated DeSales on the road Wednesday night by a final score of 13-8. The game was called in the top of the ninth inning due to rain in the area.
The Colonels had a strong first inning, taking a quick 5-0 lead with Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) getting the first run of the game for Wilkes after stealing third and advancing to home after a throwing error by the catcher. Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) and Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) recorded the second and third runs after a double to left center by Andres Cruz (Wayne, PA/Radnor) and Cruz scored after a double down the left field line by Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia). To close out the runs for the first inning, Cambria scored off a single through the left side by Michael Sabella (Cornelius, NC/Hough).
Wilkes opened the second inning with their sixth run, with Loch scoring after Cruz reached first on a fielder's choice. DeSales got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs to cut their deficit to four. Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) scored for the Colonels after Mathis was walked to open the third inning, followed by Trehnon Hugo (Wyalusing, PA/Wyalusing) after a single through the left side by Spencer. DeSales had a strong bottom of the third, scoring four runs to make it a three run game going into the fourth inning.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Colonels recorded two runs in the fifth, Hugo scored after Cruz grounded out to second and Loch and Spencer scored after Matthew Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) singled to right field to make it a 12-6 game. DeSales recorded one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to make it 12-8, and Wilkes recorded their final run in the ninth with Loch scoring on a wild pitch.
Wilton Abreu (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Liceo Americo Pérez Tolentino) picked up the win for the Colonels on the mound, pitching a total of 3.2 innings and recording four strikeouts.
The Colonels will be hosting Juniata for a weekend series starting on Saturday, April 5 at 12 p.m.
