Wilkes Women's Soccer Ties Widener 1-1 After Late Goal
WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes University women's soccer team played the Widener University Pride to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Bruggeworth Field.
The Colonels now sit at 4-2-2 on the season and the Pride go home with a 4-3-1 record.
Both teams looked to control the pace to start the game. Widener took six shots in the first half but only one was on goal as the defense for Wilkes held them in check. The Colonels managed only two shots against the Pride defense, and weren't able to find their rhythm until the end of the half.
The first shot for the Colonels came in the 33rd minute and sailed wide of the net, but they delivered on their next opportunity on the offensive end. At 38:22, Taylor Anthony (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) broke free from the Pride defense, took a shot from the right side of the penalty box, and scored her second goal of the season to put Wilkes up 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half Widener played at a much faster pace than before, but the Colonels matched that intensity from the beginning. The Pride outshot the Colonels 10-7 in the second half, but remained scoreless until the final two minutes of the match. Wilkes' best chance to put the game away came at the 50:57 mark when Sarah Straup (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) took a shot off a corner kick, but it was blocked.
With two minutes remaining in the match and Wilkes holding on to their one-goal lead, goalkeeper Molly Dietsch (Fishtown, PA/Franklin Towne Charter) received a yellow card trying to stop a great scoring opportunity for Widener. The Pride got a free kick just outside the penalty box, and that allowed Avery Drumbore to tie it up at 1-1 with 1:56 left.Â
The Pride did have a chance to steal the game from the Colonels with one more shot at 89:37 but it went over the net, sealing the draw.Â
For the match Wilkes had three corner kicks to Widener's two, but the Pride outshot them 16-9 overall and 5-4 in shots on goal. Anthony scored the lone goal for the Colonels and was second on the team in shots taken with two, one behind Straup. The Colonels used three goalkeepers on the night, first Ava Long (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) who played 31:19 with one save, then Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler) who played 32:01Â with a save of her own, and last was Dietsch who played 26:40 with two saves and one goal allowed.Â
The Colonels start Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 27 as they host the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays. The match begins at 1 p.m.
