Minick’s Late Goal Sinks Elizabethtown 2-1 in Landmark Conference Opener

Minick's Late Goal Sinks Elizabethtown 2-1 in Landmark Conference Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Taylor Minick (Reading, PA/Gov. Mifflin Senior) scored the game-winning goal with 6:37 left to play in the fourth quarter to lead the Wilkes University field hockey team to a 2-1 Landmark Conference victory over host Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field in both teams' conference opener.

Wilkes improved to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in Landmark play while Elizabethtown dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in conference games.

After a scoreless first quarter, Georgia Basket gave the Colonels a 1-0 at the break when she took a pass from Taylor Bower (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) and found the back of the net with just 34 seconds remaining in the first half. Bower made the play taking a ball from midfield and dribbling through to the top right side of the circle before depositing the pass past a crowd of Elizabethtown defenders to Basket's stick.

Elizabethtown tied the game at one late in the third quarter when Mia Fino scored off a penalty corner at the 42:52 mark of the frame.

From there Minick played hero as the first year took a cross from Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) and drilled home the game-winner at the 53:23 mark of the fourth quarter

Elizabethtown outshot Wilkes 27-6 throughout, but the Colonels made their four shots on goal count netting two of them for points. The Blue Jays also garnered 19 penalty corners to Wilkes' two attempts.

Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) was outstanding in net all day making 16 stops to preserve the one-goal conference win. Gilroy's final stop came with just seconds remaining as she batted the Elizabethtown shot away.

Wilkes returns to play Wednesday with a non-conference contest at Penn State Harrisburg at 7:00 p.m.
