Wilkes Men's Soccer Earns Draw at Arcadia
GLENSIDE - The Wilkes University men's soccer team played the Arcadia University Knights to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.
It didn't start off well for the Colonels as the Knights scored the first goal of the game on their first shot of the game. Just two minutes into the game, midfielder Scott Jordan gave Arcadia a 1-0 lead with a goal off an assist from his teammate Alex Chyzowych.
The Knights took nine more shots for the rest of the first half, with Colonels goalkeeper Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School) saving three of them and the rest going wide of the net. Conti's most pivotal save in the half came with 31 seconds left off a free kick to keep it a one-goal game.
In the second half the Colonels attempted five shots through the first 44 minutes, but none of them went in. However, on defense they held Arcadia to just two shots in the second half and both were saved by Conti to keep Wilkes in the game.
With 51 seconds left, the Colonels broke through. Will Wagstaff's (Allentown, PA/Parkland) initial shot was blocked but forward Nick Romas (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) got a clean look on the rebound, and his shot beat Arcadia goalkeeper Logan Gildea to the lower left corner to tie the game. With little time left neither team got another chance to respond, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Romas finished with the lone goal and Wagstaff finished with the lone assist. Wagstaff also led the Colonels in shots on goal with two. Conti was excellent all afternoon in net as he finished with five saves.
The Colonels now stand at 0-2-1 on the season. Their next game is once again on the road, this time against Penn State Harrisburg on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
