Wilkes Women's Soccer Wins Second Straight Game at Alvernia

READING - The Wilkes University women's soccer team earned their second win in a row with a tough 1-0 win against the Alvernia University Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels got their opportunity early to get the board and they took advantage of it. In the 6th minute, Abby Bolz (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) maneuvered through the Alvernia defense and found a wide open Maggie Allen (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) right in front of the goal area. Allen shook Alvernia goalkeeper Abby Rowley and shot at the empty net to get Wilkes on the board 1-0.

That was all that the Colonels needed as their defense kept the Golden Wolves offense in check all afternoon. Alvernia had chances to even up the game in the first half as they took five shots, but only one was on goal and it was saved by goalkeeper Ava Long (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen).

Even with the strong defense, the Wilkes offense kept the pressure on Alvernia's defense. The Colonels took seven shots in the second half and three were on goal. The Golden Wolves only took three shots in the half and only one was on goal, this time saved by Molly Dietsch (Fishtown, PA/Franklin Towne Charter) in net.

In the end, the Colonels prevented the Golden Wolves from taking a shot for the final 12 minutes of the game and held on for the 1-0 win.

The goal for Allen was the first of her collegiate career, and for Bolz it was her first collegiate assist. Bolz also led the team with three shots, one of which was on goal. Lastly, the first-year goalkeeper duo of Long and Dietsch each recorded a save.

The Colonels improved to 2-1 on the season and will return to action for their home opener at Bruggeworth Field on Wednesday Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. against King's College (Pa.).
