WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes University women's basketball team put up a good fight, but ultimately fell short against the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays 59-39 Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center.
The loss drops the Colonels to 3-10 overall and 0-6 in Landmark play, while the Blue Jays improve to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
Both teams struggled on offense in the first half, as neither team led by more than one possession in the first 20 minutes of action. In the first quarter the Colonels shot 3-16 from the field and went 0-5 from beyond the arc, while the Blue Jays shot a similar 3-17 from the field and went 1-8 from three.Â
Elizabethtown led 8-7 going into the second quarter, and kept that lead for most of the quarter with both teams remaining ice cold from the field. The Blue Jays led 13-11 with 3:44 left in the half, but Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) went on a 5-0 run with a three and a layup in transition put the Colonels up 16-13 with under a minute to go. However, Ava Chapman nailed a three in the final seconds to tie the game 16-16 at halftime. In the first half, Wilkes shot just 25.9% from the field and Elizabethtown shot 19.4% from the field.
In the second half the Blue Jays blew the game open. They outscored the Colonels 26-8 in the quarter by shooting 10-18 from the field, and hitting half of their threes (3-6). Elizabethtown led 42-24 going into the fourth quarter, and kept that cushion for the rest of the game to seal the victory.
Elizabethtown outshot Wilkes 35.8% to 25.9% and committed 19 turnovers compared to 22 for the Colonels. The Blue Jays also outrebounded the Colonels 51-36.
Matos led the way for Wilkes with 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals on 5-15 shooting. She was the only Colonel in double figures. Makenna Mummert was the only Blue Jay in double figures with 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists on 8-14 shooting from the field and 3-7 shooting from three.
The Colonels remain at home for their next Landmark Conference game against the Drew University Rangers on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
