WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team returned to winning ways Saturday evening, defeating Alvernia 5-1. The Colonels snapped a three-game losing streak off the back of a two-goal performance from
Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA/).
With the win, the Colonels improved to 9-6-3 (6-6-2 MAC), while Alvernia fell to 11-7-0 (9-5-0 MAC).
Nate Terski (North Grafton, MA/) fired home the opening goal at 12:04 into the first period to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) and
Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) provided the helpers on the play. Lowe scored with less than a minute left on a solo breakaway effort, racing through the Alvernia defense, and firing the puck home for 2-0.
The two sides traded shot for shot and hit for hit until Lowe made it a 3-0 contest at 18:42 into the second period. The Colonels went into the second intermission with a commanding three goal lead.
Bryan Weissler (Floral Park, NY) scored just two-and-a-half minutes into the third period, nabbing his first collegiate goal, and giving the home side a 4-0 lead. Alvernia answered back at 10:01 with Matthew Imbriano netting the tally.
Carter Jordan (Fort Collins, CO/) finished things off for the Colonels with a power play goal at 15:45 into the third period.
Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) and Christan Blomquist each recorded their second assists of the night on the play.
Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) made 30 total saves in the Colonel victory. Terski led Wilkes skaters with five shots on goal, while
Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/) went 17-26 in the faceoff dot.
For Alvernia, Connor Graham recorded 32 saves in the loss. Frazer Dodd led the Golden Wolves with four shots on goal.
The Colonels return to home ice once again next Friday, Jan. 30 with a MAC matchup against Lebanon Valley to finish the season series between the two sides. Puck drop against the Dutchmen is slated for 4:50 p.m. from the Toyota Sportsplex.
