Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls to Moravian at Home
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team continued their four-game homestand at the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Moravian University Greyhounds 65-52.
The Colonels fall to 4-13 overall and 1-9 in Landmark play, while the Greyhounds improve to 7-10 on the year and 5-5 against conference opponents.
Carolyn Lundy (Fair Haven, NJ/St. John Vianney) gave Wilkes an early 5-4 lead in the first with a triple, with
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) adding a layup to push the lead to three points with two minutes to play in the first. The visitors responded with four straight points of their own to take a 10-7 advantage into the second quarter.
An 8-5 run pushed the Greyhound lead to 18-12 early in the second frame, but the Colonel offense came alive for a nine-point swing punctuated by back-to-back treys by
Charlotte Taylor (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) and
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) that gave Wilkes a 21-18 lead. The Greyhounds then leveled at 21 after a trey of their own, as the teams traded the lead back and forth before tying again at 28 with less than two minutes left to play in the half. One make from the charity stripe gave Moravian a 29-28 advantage going into halftime. The Colonels scored 21 points in the second quarter, the most on the day.
After trading a pair of free throws each, Warren put the Colonels ahead 32-31 with a layup early in the third quarter. The Greyhounds then went on a 6-2 scoring run to take the lead back, before Warren brought the Colonels within one after a make from beyond the arc.
Unfortunately for the Colonels they were unable to grasp the lead again, as Moravian went into the break ahead 47-41, and took the 65-52 victory leading the whole of the fourth quarter.
