Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Dominant Third Period Pushes Men’s Ice Hockey Past Stevenson

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team concluded their three-week long homestand on Saturday evening, defeating Stevenson University 4-1 in the Julia 'Hockey' Mazur Memorial Game.

Off the back of a two-goal game from Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA/), and a dominant third period, the Colonels improved to 11-6-3 (8-6-2 MAC), while Stevenson fell to 12-6-1 (11-3-1 MAC).

Prior to the game, the Colonels honored late team equipment and social media manager Julia 'Hockey' Mazur, who tragically lost her battle with cancer in 2023. Mazur's mother, Carey took part in a ceremonial pregame puck drop with Colonels captain Mason Vonk (West Olive, MI/) and Stevenson captain Blake Benson.

The home team struck first off the stick of Lowe just at 9:26 into the opening period on the power play to give the Colonels a 1-0 win. Lowe lit the lamp once more four-and-a-half minutes later to give Wilkes a 2-0 lead over first-place Stevenson.

The Mustangs had a say late in the first period when Caden Smith scored to make it a 2-1 contest with just over a minute left in the opening frame.

In the second period, it was the goaltending show as both Wilkes' Duncan Rolleman (New Hamburg, ON/) and Stevenson's Jake DeLoss came up largely for their respective sides, saving a combined 24 shots in the second frame alone.

The Colonels aimed to extend their lead in the third period, and they did just that with a dominant period. Trevor Belak (Pittsburgh, PA) clinched a two-point game with a goal at 14:56, off assists from Lowe and Patrick Roginski (Shelby Twp., MI/), who also clinched a two-point game on the play.

Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) put the final tally on the board just 45 seconds later to make it 4-1, clinching a hard fought victory over the Mustangs.

Rolleman ended the night with 30 saves in the victory, while DeLoss finished with 25 stops.

The Colonels return to the ice next Friday, Feb. 6 with an away contest against Neumann University. Puck drop against the Knights is slated for 7 p.m. from IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston, Pa.
