Wilkes Field Hockey Suffers 2-1 Overtime Setback at Catholic
WASHINGTON, DC – Host Catholic University scored 6:29 into overtime to escape with a 2-1 Landmark Conference victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
Wilkes suffered its first conference loss falling to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in league games snapping a five-game win streak in the process. Catholic remained unbeaten in conference games improving to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in Landmark play.
Catholic got on the board 2:28 into the first quarter when Maddie Pennisi scored unassisted.
Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) answered back in the second quarter when she found the back of the cage on a penalty stroke goal tying the game at 1-1 with just under four minutes left in the first half.
The second half went scoreless with each team garnering several scoring chances but were unable to find the game-winner.
Tess Hake then took a pass from Anna Cusumano and scored the decision-maker at the 66:29 mark in overtime to push the Cardinals ahead for the win.
Catholic held a 14-5 shot advantage while garnering 12 penalty corners to Wilkes' two attempts.
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) finished with five saves in the loss in goal. Camryn Lowman earned the win making two saves.
Wilkes returns home Tuesday when the Colonels host Drew University for a 7:00 p.m. Landmark Conference match up at Schmidt Stadium.
