Wilkes Women's Soccer Falls to Susquehanna

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes women's soccer team suffered their first Landmark Conference loss of the season in a 2-1 defeat against Susquehanna on Wednesday night.

The Colonels drop to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in Landmark play, while the River Hawks improve to 8-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference.

Wilkes opened with an early opportunity as Abby Bolz (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) skimmed the ball into a dangerous position that Erin Edwards (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) buried into the back of the net, securing her first goal of the season. Wilkes and Susquehanna battled with quick transition plays, but neither side was able to convert in the first half.

Momentum quickly shifted in the opening of the first half as the River Hawks were hunting for their first Landmark Conference win. In the 52nd minute, Susquehanna fired a driven cross into the penalty box that found the feet of a lone attacker, leveling the game 1-1.

Wilkes attempted to counteract Susquehanna's incessant attack, but it was not enough as Susquehanna found a similar goal scoring opportunity that they converted for a 2-1 lead. The Colonels pushed for an equalizer in the closing minutes but came up short, falling 2-1.

Susquehanna ultimately had the upper hand on offense, outshooting Wilkes 13-10. Sarah Straup (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) and Hannah Dennison (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) led the team with three shots, followed by Bolz with two. In goal, Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler) completed seven saves on the night.

The Colonels next match up is their Homecoming game against Catholic University of America on Saturday, October 10. Kick off will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
