Men's Ice Hockey Rallies to Defeat Alvernia 2–1 in MAC Opener

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team scored goals in the second and third periods to overcome a deficit and get past Alvernia 2–1 in its Middle Atlantic Conference opener.

The win improves the Colonels to 2–1, while Alvernia is still searching for its first win at 0–3.

The opening 20 minutes were a physical one, with power-play chances for both teams, but ultimately neither team was able to open the scoring, concluding a scoreless opening frame.

Both teams were highlighted by stellar goaltending from Jeff Kreidler of Alvernia and Duncan Rolleman (New Hamburg, ON/) for the Colonels to keep it 0–0  in the first 30 minutes of action. The Golden Wolves finally opened the scoring 10:21 into the second period when a long Peter Lopes shot deflected off the pipe and in, giving them a 1–0 lead.

The Colonels responded on a power play with less than two minutes remaining in the second period when a long pass from Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC/) found the stick of Caiden Mech (San Clemente, CA/), who promptly buried it to tie the contest at one heading into the final 20 minutes.

Both teams kept the physical play up, and the Colonels earned a power play with 10:46 remaining. The Colonels used the man-up advantage to score the game-winning goal by Cooper Owens (Colorado Springs, CO) with 9:58 remaining. Alvernia got plenty of chances down the stretch, including while playing with an empty net for most of the final two minutes. The Golden Wolves' best chance came in the final minute, but an Alvernia shot was drilled off the pipe, and the Colonels held on for the 2–1 victory.

Wilkes outshot the Golden Wolves 38–32 and controlled 42 faceoffs to Alvernia's 39. Mech led the Colonels with five shots, and Rolleman stopped 31 of 32 shots to pick up his second win of the year.

Wilkes heads to Maryland tomorrow, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. to take on Stevenson in a MAC semifinal rematch from a year ago.
