Men's Ice Hockey Clinches MAC Playoff Spot With Win Over King's

JENKINS TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team continued their stretch of games on the road on Friday night, defeating cross-town rivals King's College, 3-1.

With the win, the Colonels clinched a postseason berth and improved to 13-7-3 (10-7-2 MAC). King's fell to 4-16-3 (4-12-3 MAC).

Wilkes opened the scoring at 12:13 into the first period when Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA/) lit the lamp to give the Colonels the advantage.

However, from there, it was a defensive and goaltending battle. Throughout the second period, the Colonels pushed to extend their lead, recording 23 shots on goal. The Monarchs were heavily outshot during the contest, recording five shots on goal in the second period.

Wilkes finally extended their lead just over a minute into the third period when Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) found twine to give the navy and gold a 2-0 lead.

Thomas Soucy gave the Monarchs a lifeline at 5:59 into the third period, but their push for an equalizer would be squandered by the Colonel defense.

Wilkes finished it off late on in the third period when Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) scored a shorthanded, empty net goal to make it 3-1 and clinch a win, as well as a postseason berth in hostile territory.

Between the pipes for the Colonels, Jeffrey Fillion (Chicoutimi, QC) made 12 saves, allowing a goal. Lee recorded an assist alongside his goal for a two-point night, while Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/) recorded two helpers to give him a two-point night as well.

Ben Williams made 41 saves in a valiant effort, while Grant Parshall led the Monarchs with 10 wins in the faceoff dot.

The Colonels are back on the road tomorrow, Feb. 14 in their second-to-last game of the regular season, taking on Alvernia University. Puck drop against the Golden Wolves is set for 5 p.m. from Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex in Reading, Pa.
