Men's Ice Hockey Sweeps Weekend Slate With Win Over Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team returned to action this evening with a matchup against Alvernia University in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) play. The Colonels survived a late third period push by the Golden Wolves and held on to clinch a 3-2 win in hostile territory.

Following the victory, Wilkes improved their record to 14-7-3 (11-7-2 MAC), while Alvernia fell to 14-10-0 (12-8-0 MAC). With the win, the Colonels clinched a season series win over the Golden Wolves, winning two out of three contests.

Wilkes opened the scoring at 7:27 into the first period when Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC/) lit the lamp to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The rest of the first period saw both sides have numerous scoring opportunities. Going into the first intermission, the Colonels and Golden Wolves were both already in double-digit shot totals.

Just under 11 minutes into the middle period, Jack Lee (Naperville, IL) scored to make it a 2-0 contest. Fellow seniors Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) and Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/) recorded assists on the play.

After a scoreless rest of the second period, the Colonels made it 3-0 at 3:14 into the third frame. Tyler Boudreau (Edmonton, AB/) netted the goal that gave the Navy and Gold a great deal of breathing room.

However, Alvernia answered back just over a minute later when Edvin Robertsson scored to cut Wilkes' lead to two goals. Late on in the third period, the Golden Wolves pushed to get back into the game, and eventually scored at 18:46 to make it 3-2. The Colonels held on, though, thanks to two blocked shots from Carter Jordan (Fort Collins, CO/) in the dying seconds of the game.

Between the pipes for Wilkes, Duncan Rolleman (New Hamburg, ON/) made 28 saves on 30 shots faced. Carlson won 21 faceoffs in the contest, while eight different Colonels recorded points in the win.

For Alvernia, Connor Graham made 41 saves in the game. Robertsson led the Golden Wolves with five shots on goal.

Next up for the Colonels, it is the conclusion of regular season play in the MAC on Friday, Feb. 20, taking on Misericordia at the Toyota Sportsplex. Wilkes will serve as the away side, with puck drop set for 5 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
