Fourth Quarter Goals Push Marywood Past Wilkes Men's Lacrosse 9-6
SCRANTON, PA – Host Marywood University scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to break open a tie on way to a 9-6 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon.
The Colonels suffered their first defeat of the young season moving to 1-1. Marywood recorded its first win of 2026 improving to 1-1 on the year.
Wilkes struck first when
Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) scored off an assist from
Blaine Snyder (Germansville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) with 13:55 on the first quarter clock. It was then his brother's turn as
Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) notched his first goal of the season off a helper from
Tim Hartka (Phoenix, MD/Calvert Hall) three minutes later as Wilkes led 2-0.
Marywood answered back with two goals over the next five minutes of play tying the game at two with just under six minutes left in the first frame.
Lucas Ortenberg (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) found the back of the net at 4:23 thanks to an assist from
Anthony DiFrancesco (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) to put the Colonels back ahead 3-2. The Pacers answered one more time in the first quarter tying the game at three thanks to Ricky Strobel's second goal.
The teams continued to trade goals over the second stanza with S. Sosnovik taking a pass from brother A. Sosnovik and scoring his second of the game and third of the season pushing Wilkes ahead 4-3 thirty seconds into the quarter. Marywood responded with back-to-back goals, including a second from Strobel, to take its first advantage of the contest at 5-4.
Stone Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) completed his hat trick with 1:47 left until the break tying the game at five with the assist coming from
Oscar Cline (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz).
The game remained tied through the third quarter as Cline scored off an A. Sosnovik assist and Marywood answered with a goal with 22 seconds left in the frame to take the game to the fourth.
Marywood took over the game in the final 15 minutes scoring three unanswered goals at 8:02, 6:02 and 1:49 respectively to seal the non-league victory.
S. Sosnovik led the attack with three goals while A. Sosnovik added one goal and two assists. Cline contributed one goal and one helper.
Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) suffered the defeat in goal for Wilkes finishing with 16 saves.
The Pacers received a pair of hat tricks from Strobel and Ben Meighan. Colin Trainor earned the win in net making six saves.
Wilkes continues its road stretch to start the season Saturday with a non-league matchup at FDU-Florham starting at 3:30 p.m.
