SCRANTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team took the court on Wednesday night against No. 2 University of Scranton on the road, falling 93-42 from the John Long Center.
The Colonels fall to 5-19 (2-15 Landmark) following the defeat, while Scranton moves to 24-0 (17-0 Landmark).
The Royals jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game.
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) made a layup to cut the lead to seven before the Royals and Colonels went back and forth for a few minutes.
With 3:30 remaining in the first quarter, Scranton held a 22-10 lead. For the Colonels,
Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) netted the final
basket of the first quarter to make it a 26-12 contest at the end of the opening frame.
Scranton began the second quarter with a quick basket from Sophia Talutto just six seconds in. After a 6-3 run for the Colonels, the Royals hit back-to-back three pointers to make it a 20-point contest.
Aivry Devoy (Milton, MA/Archbishop Williams) and Kaci Kranson traded triples before Scranton made it a 44-21 game with 4:32 left in the second quarter.
The Royals ended the first half on a 10-0 run, sending them to a 54-23 lead at halftime.
Scranton continued their run into the third quarter, holding the Colonels scoreless in the third quarter until
Anya Richet (Plymouth, PA/Wyoming Valley West) ended the 19-0 run with a layup for two.
At the end of the third quarter, the Royals' lead increased to 43 points.
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) opened the fourth quarter scoring with a layup, with Scranton answering back seconds later with a layup from Selena Cieszko.
Scranton continued to build their lead, making it a 81-34 game halfway through the final frame.
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) scored 10 points in the fourth quarter for the Colonels. Richet scored the final basket of the game with five seconds remaining, with Scranton clinching the win at home.
For the Colonels, Warren led the team with 18 points. Matos and Richet each finished with six points, with Devoy added five. Overall, Wilkes went 15-43 from the field, but were 11-19 from the foul line.
The Royals were led by Kranson with 20 points, while Elizabeth Bennet and Meghan Lamanna finished in double-digit scoring. Scranton went 35-74 from the field, as well as 11-25 from the three-point line.
Wilkes returns home for its final game of the season this Saturday against Goucher College on Senior Day. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
