Wilkes Men's Volleyball Sweeps Immaculata In Final Home Match of Season
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes men's volleyball team closed out its home schedule in dominant fashion, sweeping Immaculata University Wednesday evening to improve to 12-15 on the season. With the loss, the Mighty Macs fall to 7-9 overall.
Both teams battled early in the opening set, trading points through the first 20 rallies before Wilkes created separation.
Logan Maha (Sayville, NY/Sayville) and
Marcus Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) powered the offense, while
Joshua Conley (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South) added a key service ace to help the Colonels build a three-point advantage. Immaculata answered with two late points, but
Carter Otto (Mountain View, CA/Mountain View) delivered the final kill to secure a 25-22 set-one victory.
Wilkes carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Mighty Macs briefly took control with a 4-0 run, but the Colonels quickly responded with an 8-2 surge, highlighted by two kills each from Otto and Maha. Wilkes extended its lead to as many as eight and cruised to a 25-18 win, outhitting Immaculata .194 to .111 in the frame.
In the third set, the Colonels used an early 6-1 run to take a 10-6 lead, with
Zach Sheaffer (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and Binner contributing key kills. Wilkes maintained control throughout, as Sheaffer recorded three kills down the stretch and
Johnnathan Rocha (Wilkes Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) added two more. The Colonels closed out the set 25-21 to complete the sweep, finishing the match with a .189 hitting percentage compared to Immaculata's .031 while leading in nearly every statistical category.
Maha led the Colonels with seven kills, while
Aiden Amon (Pittstown, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Otto added five apiece. Conley directed the offense with a team-high 23 assists, and Otto contributed defensively with seven digs.
Immaculata was led by Josh McGurl, who recorded nine kills and seven digs, while Luke Dortenzo added 15 assists.
Wilkes will close out its season on Thursday, traveling to face King's College (Pa.) in a non-conference matchup. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
