ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Wilkes University men's lacrosse team suffered their fifth-straight loss against the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays 23-2 Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Colonels fall to 4-10 (1-5 Landmark) on the season, while the Blue Jays improve to 5-9 (4-2 Landmark).
Elizabethtown controlled this game from the very beginning, jumping out to a 9-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to seven-different goal scorers.
In the second quarter, the Colonels tightened up their defense and managed to finally get on the board with an unassisted Anthony DiFrancesco (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) goal at 13:43. The team held the Blue Jays to just three goals in the quarter and trailed 12-1 at halftime.
Elizabethtown picked up right where they left off out of the break, scoring all six goals in the third and outshooting Wilkes 17-4. That gave them an 18-1 lead going into the fourth, and they netted another five goals in the last 15 minutes to eventually reach the final score.
The Blue Jays dominated all major stat categories. They outshot the Colonels 64-22 (39-10 shots on goal), grabbed more ground balls (58-20), and won the face off battle 24-4. Tristan Coleman led the way for them with eight points on three goals and five assists, while four other Blue Jays finished with a hat trick.
DiFrancesco led Wilkes with one goal and one assist, and Austin Sosnovik (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) scored the team's only other goal. In net, Ben Zaitz got the win for Elizabethtown by allowing just one goal and making five saves in 30 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Caleb Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) took the loss for Wilkes with 16 saves and 23 goals allowed.
The Colonels return to the field on Wednesday, April 15, for their final home game of the season against the University of Scranton Royals. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
