Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Bested by No. 13 Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team matched up against the 13th-ranked University of Scranton Royals Wednesday afternoon, losing to the Royals 23-2 on the road.

The Colonels drop to 8-7 (0-7 Landmark) this season, while the Royals improve to 11-4 (7-0 Landmark) on the season.

Seven different Scranton players scored in the first quarter, and the Royals jumped out to a 9-0 lead going into the second. Wilkes surrendered another five goals over the first 10 minutes of the second quarter, but finally got on the board with 2:11 left in the half thanks to a goal by Morgan Hettesheimer (Monroe Twp., PA/Tunkhannock Area).

The Royals scored another goal in the final minute of the half to take a 15-1 lead into the break, and then scored all five third quarter goals to push the lead to 20-1 going into the fourth. They scored another three goals over the final 15 minutes, while Alexis Gutilla scored the only other Wilkes goal with one second left to reach the final score.

The Colonels were outshot by the Royals 45-12, including 29-9 in shots on goal. Scranton also won the draw control battle 18-8 and grabbed more ground balls (22-16). Individually, Sadie Gilbert (1G 3A), Eileen Hewitt (3G 1A), and Allyson Flynn (2G 2A) each had four-point games for the Royals. They also had another four players who finished with three points.

Meanwhile for Wilkes, Guttilla and Hettesheimer each finished with one goal, while Karinne Podwika (Duryea, PA/Pittston Area Senior) finished with one assist. Davyn Bonvie (Wyoming, PA/Dallas) took the loss in net with 10 saves and 23 goals allowed, and Eva Guerino got the win with four saves and one goal allowed in 30 minutes.

The Colonels return to the field on Saturday, April 18, for Senior Day against the Moravian University Greyhounds at home. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
