Wilkes Women's Tennis Wins Third Consecutive Match with Victory at Susquehanna
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's tennis team earned their third victory in as many days Sunday afternoon, as they defeated Susquehanna University 5-2 at the Garrett Tennis Courts.
Wilkes improves to 8-8 (4-4 Landmark) on the year, while Susquehanna falls to 5-10 (2-7 Landmark) overall. With the win, the Colonels clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs for the first time since 2023 and first time under head coach
Scott Veith.
The River Hawks picked up the team point in doubles play, with the duo of
Ana Savkovic (Belgrade, Serbia/The Hoosac School) and
Julia Spaeth (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg Area) the only pair to win for the Colonels, taking the No. 1 doubles match 6-0.
The Colonels then shined in singles play, taking the first five singles matches to cruise to victory. Savkovic's undefeated record in No. 1 singles play remained untarnished, as she took the top match 6-0, 6-1.
Isabel Schreffler (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) then took the No. 2 match 6-0, 6-3, followed by Spaeth's victory at No. 3 6-3, 6-0.
Kensington Edmond (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) was victorious at No. 4 with a straight-set victory 6-4, 6-2, and
Ava Vacula (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area Secondary Center) took the No. 5 match in a three-set win, 6-3, 6-2, 10-7.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday, April 22 as the Colonels host Lycoming College at the Ralston Athletic Complex in a match with potential playoff implications. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
