Wilkes Women's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with Win Over Lebanon Valley College 2-1
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. - The Wilkes Women's Soccer team celebrated senior day with a win over Lebanon Valley College 2-1, for their first win over the Flying Dutchmen in 15 years.
The Colonels improve to a 4-1 record while the Flying Dutchmen fall 1-3.
The Flying Dutchmen started the game with an early goal that found the top of the net. The early goal would go unanswered until a foul thirty minutes later gave Wilkes a perfect opportunity. Senior
Jess Shea (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) stepped up to the plate with a powerful shot that found the back of the net, tying the game 1-1 before the end of the half.
Entering the second half, Wilkes was hungry for the win with
Abby Bolz (Fair Hill, MD/Rising Sun) and
Hannah Dennison (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) finding opportunities in the beginning of the half that did not find the back of the net.
In the 87th minute, Wilkes fired a cross into the penalty box that ricocheted off of a Flying Dutchmen defender into the net for an own goal. Wilkes shut down any offensive advances from Lebanon Valley in the final three minutes of play to lock up the victory.
Wilkes outshot Lebanon Valley 10-5, though Lebanon Valley proved to have more shots on net 3-2. Shea was at the top of the leader board in goals and shots on net, finishing with one goal and four shots on her Senior Day.
Prior to the match, Wilkes honored its four seniors
Taylor Gollin (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton),
Erin Edwards (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen),
Erin Somerville (Warminster, PA/William Tennent), and Shea for all of their hard work and dedication to the women's soccer program.
The Colonels next match is on the road against Marywood University on Wednesday, September 16. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
