Wilkes Field Hockey Falls at No. 23 Ithaca in Non-League Play
ITHACA, N.Y. – Host No. 23 Ithaca College scored early then added three more goals in the second half on way to a 4-0 victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Wednesday night at Higgins Stadium.
Wilkes fell to 2-4 overall snapping a two-game win streak in the process. Ithaca improved to 5-1 on the season following the home non-league win.
Ithaca scored the game's first goal with 2:54 left in the first quarter when Ellie Gipe snuck a shot past the Wilkes defense and goalie off a penalty corner from Caroline Folan.
The Bombers added to the lead at 2-0 early in the third quarter when Audrey McMahon took a rebound and deposited the shot to the back of the net with 6:46 left in the frame. Ithaca pushed the advantage to 3-0 before the end of the third when Sadie Ruiz scored unassisted off a rebound.
Ruiz then sealed the victory with her second strike of the game midway through the fourth quarter when she took a pass off a penalty corner from Brooke Snider as Ithaca held a 4-0 lead with 5:44 on the clock.
Ithaca held a 14-5 shot advantage while garnering six penalty corners to the Colonels five attempts.
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) started and played three quarters in the cage for Wilkes finishing with four saves while
Olivia Wickel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) played the fourth quarter making three saves.
The Colonels continue their road stretch on Saturday when they travel to McDaniel College for a non-league matchup scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
