Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match with John Jay and Cairn

NEW YORK – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team traveled to the Big Apple to take on John Jay and Cairn in a tri-match on Saturday.

Wilkes defeated host John Jay in straight sets before falling to Cairn three sets in the second match. The split decisions moved the Colonels to 8–4 on the season.

Match 1: Wilkes 3, John Jay 0
After trailing 5–2 early in the opening set, the Colonels rallied off five straight points, highlighted by a pair of Kendra Kalp (Somerset, PA/Rockwood) kills to claim a 7–5 lead, and Wilkes was off and running. Kills on back-to-back points by Abby Dornblaser (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) capped off another five-point rally, building a 13–9 Colonels lead. The blue and gold used yet another rally to open up a 20–13 lead, and a block by Dornblaser and Charlize Leukus (York haven, PA/Red Land) clinched the first set for the Colonels, 25–19.

Wilkes raced out to a 6–1 lead in the second set, highlighted by a pair of assisted blocks by Mia Leon (Ponce, PR/Caribbean) and Olivia Contreras (Northridge, CA/Grover Cleveland). The Colonels dominated the second set, using a seven-point run to take a convincing 18–6 lead. Wilkes cruised to a 25–11 victory in the set, landing an impressive 13 kills on just 22 attempts.

John Jay rebounded by scoring the first three points of the third set, before the Colonels answered with a 7–1 run and maintained the lead the rest of the way. The Bloodhounds pulled back to 10–9, but a 5–1 run, highlighted by a pair of Dornblaser kills, built Wilkes' lead back to 15–10. The Colonels prevented John Jay from any comeback attempt, and a Leon kill secured a 25–21 third set and a sweep over the Bloodhounds.

Leon led the Colonels with 13 kills, while Kalp added 10 and led the team with 11 digs. Rachel Anderson contributed 16 assists, and Maddy Durfee (Attica, NY/Attica) had 12. On defense, Contreras led Wilkes with four assisted blocks, followed by Leon and Dornblaser with 2.

Match 2: Cairn 3, Wilkes 0
After the John Jay victory, the Colonels remained on the court to face Cairn. After cruising through its first match, Wilkes faced early adversity when the Highlanders used an eight-point rally to open a 15–5 lead in the opening set. The Colonels responded with an 8–1 run, including seven straight points to trim Cairn's lead to 16–13. Leon had three kills, and Anderson served two aces in the Colonels' rally. The Highlanders used another big run, this time a 6–1 rally, to open up a 24–16 lead. With Cairn facing set point, Wilkes scored four straight points before a Highlanders kill earned them a 25–20 first-set victory.

The Colonels jumped out to a 4–0 lead in set two, with Leon having a trio of kills. The Highlanders slowly rallied back before an 11–4 spurt built Cairn a 20–16 lead. The Colonels scored four of the next five points to cut the deficit to 21–20, but Cairn put down four kills to seal a tight second set, 25–23.

The Highlanders gradually built an 18–10 lead in the third set, partly thanks to a quartet of three-point rallies. The Colonels answered with a four-point rally to cut Cairn's lead in half, but the deficit was too much, and Cairn earned the straight-set victory, 25–19.

Leon again carried the Colonels' attack with 15 kills and added a team-high 14 digs. Anderson led Wilkes with 13 assists, while Durfee closely followed with 11.

The Colonels return to Pennsylvania Wednesday night to face Misericordia in Dallas. The match will start at 7:00 p.m.
