Field Hockey Drops Season Opener at Kean

UNION, N.J. – The Wilkes University field hockey team opened its 2026 campaign at Kean University, where the Colonels suffered a 6–1 defeat against the Cougars.

Kean opened the scoring at 7:08 when Kelseigh Sargent scored off the contest's first penalty corner. The Cougars continued to find opportunities, including five first-half penalty corners, but seven saves by junior Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) held Kean to a 1–0 lead heading into the break.

Goals were early and often in the second half, as Shannon Conroy doubled Kean's lead just 51 seconds in. The Colonels answered 50 seconds later when Elizabeth Hodder (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) found the back of the cage for her first career goal off an assist from Georgia Baskett (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg), trimming Kean's lead to 2–1.

Over the final 28 minutes, Kean tacked on a pair of goals in the third and fourth quarters to earn a 6–1 victory in both teams' opening game.

Ali Stoner led Kean with two goals and an assist, while Shannon Conroy added a goal and three assists. 

Gilroy started and played 58 minutes in goal, recording 13 saves for the Colonels.

Wilkes returns to Schmidt Stadium for its home opener on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. when it welcomes Montclair State.
