Men's Soccer Suffers Defeat at Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team played its final game before Landmark Conference play Tuesday night at Marywood University, where the Colonels ultimately fell 4–2.

The defeat drops Wilkes to 0–6, while Marywood improves to 3–2–2.

The Pacers set the pace early, finding the back of the net twice in the first 21 minutes. Marywood's first goal came in the 13th minute, with Aiden Schmitt finished a cross from Jack Forbes, and doubled its lead in the 21st minute with a Kyle Falcon goal.

The Colonels' best scoring opportunity in the opening half came when they drew a Pacers yellow card inside the penalty box in the 36th minute. Giovanni Mazzola (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall High School) capitalized by burying a penalty kick in the bottom right corner to trim the Marywood lead in half. The goal was also Mazzola's second straight game scoring a penalty goal. The Pacers quickly responded three minutes later, taking a 3–1 lead into the break.

Marywood opened up a 4–1 lead in the 52nd minute when Forbes tallied his first goal of the night. Wilkes added another goal in the 67th minute when Charles Floyd (Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) scored his first career goal off a deflected save by the Marywood goalkeeper, making it a 4–2 Pacers victory.

Marywood outshot Wilkes 19–14, including 11–8 in shots on goal. The Pacers also held the upper hand in corner kicks, 6–5.

Kendall Heck (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area High School) led the Colonels in shots, taking five, including three on goal. Mazzola also added three shots on top of his penalty goal.

Tyler Tarnalicki (Plains, PA/Holy Redeemer) played the first 61 minutes in goal, stopping six Marywood shots. Tarnalicki was relieved by Matthew Conti (Florence, NJ/Florence Township Memorial High School), who made his first appearance of the season and made one save.

The Colonels kick off Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Elizabethtown College at 1:00 p.m.
