Wilkes Field Hockey Opens Landmark Play with Victory over Elizabethtown
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University field hockey team braved the elements en route to a 4-0 victory over Elizabethtown College at Schmidt Stadium Saturday afternoon, opening conference play with a victory for the second consecutive season.
Wilkes improves to 4-5 on the year, while Elizabethtown falls to 5-3.
Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) opened the scoring in the first quarter with a blistering shot from the top of the arc, drawing first blood on the afternoon. The Colonels survived a four-shot quarter by the Blue Jays in the second to take the lead into halftime.
Wilkes came out of the gate hot in the third, as
Sage Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman) found the back of the cage just 2:43 into the period to double the lead, assisted by Karp.
Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) provided the dagger four minutes later to lift the navy and gold to victory 3-0.
The Colonels out-shot the Blue Jays 17-13, doubling their shots on goal 12-6. Karp led the offensive efforts with a goal and an assist on the day, setting new career highs in shots (10) and shots on goal (7). Goalkeeper
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) made five saves on the day, with
Emma Dengler (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) providing a defensive save in the first quarter.
Avery Mettle led Elizabethtown with three shots on goal, while Lily DeBlasio made nine saves in goal.
Wilkes returns to home turf for their next contest on Wednesday, September 30 to face Utica University in the final non-conference contest of the season at 4:30 p.m. This matchup will also serve as the team's Morgan's Message Dedication Game.
