Wilkes Field Hockey Edges Utica in OT for Third Straight Win
EDWARDSVILLE –
Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored 6:06 into overtime to lift the Wilkes University field hockey team to a 2-1 non-conference win over Utica University Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
Wilkes improved to 5-5 overall notching its third straight win. Utica dropped to 0-8 overall on the year following the road defeat.
After a scoreless first quarter,
Sage Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman) put the Colonels ahead 1-0 when she drilled home a one-timer from a cross by
Taylor Bower (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) 3:11 into the second frame.
Wilkes held the one-point advantage through the rest of the first half and into the third quarter before Utica responded tying the game at one when Jocelyn Spiezio scored off a helper from Gianna Marcantonio with 4:34 left in the third.
The teams traded chances over the final 15 minutes of play and into overtime, with Wilkes' best chance coming off the stick of Morgan where she pushed a shot just wide left in front of an empty cage four minutes into the extra period.
From there it was Karp who dribbled through the top of the circle and into the right slot before drilling a shot past the Pioneers goalie to secure the victory.
Wilkes held an 18-13 shot advantage throughout while garnering nine penalty corners to Utica's five chances.
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) earned her fourth win of the season in net finishing with seven saves.
Wilkes returns to Landmark Conference play Saturday with a road matchup at Juniata College scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
