Straup's Hat Trick Helps Wilkes Women's Soccer to 5-1 Win in Home Opener
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's soccer team treated fans to offensive fireworks at Bruggeworth Field on Friday evening, thrashing William Patterson University 5-1 in their home opener, highlighted by a
Sarah Straup (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) hat trick.
The Colonels improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 1-1.
Straup got the scoring started in the seventh minute, flying down the left wing and finishing the brilliant individual effort to put the Colonels on the board. Five minutes later, a Wilkes handball gave the Pioneers a chance from the penalty spot that they would not miss to tie the game.
Straup restored the Colonel lead in the 26
th minute after a picture-perfect through ball by
Hannah Dennison (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) set her up to beat the keeper with one touch and put Wilkes ahead 2-1, a lead they took into the halftime break.
Straup completed her hat trick in the 56
th minute, beating the Pioneer netminder at the near post to put Wilkes up 3-1. Two minutes later
Mia Black (Swarthmore, PA/Delaware Valley Friends School) got on the scoresheet with a bar-down goal to quickly extend the lead to 4-1, assisted by the sophomore striker.
In the 68
th minute,
Addi Parker (Canton, PA/Canton) put the game away, punishing the Pioneer goalkeeper for bobbling a shot and putting the final nail in the coffin.
The Colonels out-shot the Pioneers 17-4 on the day, with Straup leading all players with four goal contributions. The Colonel defense didn't allow
Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler) to see much action in her 78 minutes between the sticks, but first-year goaltender
Seren Oliver (Katy, TX/Tompkins) made two saves over the final 11 minutes of play.
Wilkes returns to action on Sunday, September 6 as the Colonels face off against Misericordia University on the road. Kickoff against the Cougars is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
