Box Score

Casandra Valentin (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland) knocked in a header off a corner kick from Katy Fissel (Madison, N.J./Madison) to break a 1-1 tie and eventually give the Lady Colonels a 2-1 win over Susquehanna.

“Casandra is possibly one of our best players in the air,” head coach John Sumoski said. “We normally try to have her in the box on a corner unless we are in the lead. Katy (Fissel) couldn't have put up a better ball for her on the corner.”

Valentin's goal came at the 80 minute mark, just over three minutes after Julie Briskey tied the game at one for Susquehanna. “We made a mistake on the play and they knew they made it,” Sumoski said of his team. Briskey's shot sailed over the head of goalkeeper Jessica Berkey (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) to tie the match.

The Lady Colonels dominated the first half offensively, but were unable to punch the ball in for a score. Wilkes out-shot the Crusaders 9-3 in the first half and 19-5 for the game. Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) broke a scoreless tie at the 74 minute mark on a pass from Jessica Gannon (Mercerville, N.J./Steinert) that left her one-on-one with goalkeeper Meredith Tompeck. Hallowell's shot off her right foot rolled to the back of the net on the right side for her third goal in just two games. She now has a team-high six goals on the year and 14 points.

"We played really good soccer today all the way around," Sumoski said. "I am proud of the way we played."

The Lady Colonels will be back in action Saturday when they host Delaware Valley at 4:30 p.m. at Ralston Field.
