The Wilkes University women's soccer team dropped their second game in a row on Tuesday, falling 2-0 to Kean College at Ralston Field.
With the loss the Lady Colonels' record moves to 5-7-1 overall while the Cougars see their record improve to 8-3 on the season.
“We got beat by a very good team today,” stated head coach
John Sumoski. “We did not play to our potential and are going to need to work extremely hard to get ready for Saturday.”
After a relatively quite first forty minutes, Kean was able to open up the scoring at the 40:59 mark when Jenna Godwin struck a shot from 25 yards out that got passed the out-stretched arms of Wilkes' goalkeeper
Sarah Shetler (Pequea, Pa./Penn Manor) to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Kean was able to score an insurance goal at the 72:11 mark when Leigha Czerwinski took a feed from Dainelle Bussiere and found the back of the net.
Wilkes almost cut the lead in half a few minutes later when
Kaitlin Vargo (Edison, N.J./Union Catholic) rifled a shot at the Cougar goal but was denied by a nice diving save from goalie Leandra Russo. The Lady Colonels could not muster another good opportunity the rest of the way.
Kean held a 10-5 advantage in shots for the game while Wilkes had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Russo stopped two shots in the shutout for the Cougars while Shetler and
Lindsey Mitchell (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) combined to make three saves in goal for the Lady Colonels.
Wilkes will return to action on Saturday when they resume Freedom Conference play as they travel to St. Davids to take on Eastern at 12 p.m.
