MADISON, N.J.– The Wilkes University women's soccer team headed to Madison, N.J. today knowing they needed a victory in order to qualify for the postseason tournament. The Lady Colonels did just that, capturing a hard fought 2-1 conference victory over FDU-Florham.
With the win, Wilkes ends the regular season with a 9-9-1 overall record and a 5-3 Freedom mark, while FDU concludes their season at 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
With the winner earning a trip to DeSales to take on the Bulldogs in the first round of the Freedom playoffs, neither team would back down in a game that featured three yellow cards and two red cards.
The Lady Colonels were able to score the critical first goal when
Katy Fissel (Madison, N.J./Madison) buried home a penalty kick at the 29:15 mark. The game remained at 1-0 heading into halftime.
However, less than six minutes into the second half, the Devils were awarded a penalty kick of their own that they were able to capitalize on to tie the game at 1-1.
Wilkes was able to take back their lead just seven minutes after the game was tied when
Alison Weidman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) found the back of the net. Neither team was able to punch in another score the rest of the way as the game ended with the 2-1 tally.

Jessica Berkey (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) stopped five shots in the victory while Lauren Albrecht and Melanie Pierson combined to make 10 saves in the losing effort for FDU.
Wilkes will now participate in the conference playoffs as they travel to take on DeSales University in the opening round on Monday. The winner of that match will then travel to take on top-seeded Eastern University on Wednesday.
