Box Score
The Wilkes women's soccer team opened the season in convincing fashion, taking a 4-0 win over Clarkson at the St. Lawrence Classic.
Despite starting seven freshmen, the Lady Colonels did not lack any offense, getting a pair of goals from senior Jess Gannon. Wilkes had 14 total shots including eight shots on goal.
“We started seven freshmen and we played everyone that was healthy,” head coach
John Sumoski said. “We showed signs and potential to be a great team.”
Freshman
Katy Fissel (Madison, N.J./Madison) scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from Sammi Elston just three minutes into the game to give the Lady Colonels a 1-0 advantage. Gannon scored her first goal just over a minute later at the 4:24 mark from a pass from
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere). Gannon then made it 3-0 at the 52 minute mark on a
Lindsay Rowland (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) assist. Junior
Julissa Reed (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin), with an assist from Ally Weidman, made it 4-0 at the 80-minute mark to close out the scoring for the Lady Colonels.
“Jess Gannon had two rockets, but it was a team effort. We were able to score on things we have been working on in practice,” Sumoski said
The Lady Colonels will remain in action tomorrow when they face host St. Lawrence at noon.
