The Wilkes University women's soccer team opened up Freedom Conference play with one of their strongest performances of the season, defeating defending conference champion Manhattanville College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
“After today's game, I am excited for our next game. We finally showed today that we could play good soccer for a full 90 minutes,” head coach
John Sumoski stated.
With the win, the Lady Colonels improve their record to 4-5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Freedom Conference, while the Valiants see their record slide to 3-7 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
After a relatively quite first 30 minutes of soccer, Wilkes finally broke through in the 35
th minute as
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) took a headed pass through the defense from Allyssa Kelley and beat Valiant keeper Ali Bromson in the bottom left corner to give the Lady Colonels the 1-0 advantage.
A little over a minute later, Hallowell would strike again on a very similar play, this time taking a through-pass from
Alison Weidman (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and chipping the ball over a charging Bromson to give Wilkes the 2-0 margin they would not relinquish.
“Hallowell had two tremendous goals and was dangerous for us all day,” added Sumoski. “Our back four was also very solid. We worked hard, together, and didn't allow too good many opportunities.”
Wilkes held an 8-6 advantage in shots as well as a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Jessica Berkey (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) made two saves to record the shutout for Wilkes. Bromson stopped two shots for Manhattanville.
The Lady Colonels will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to non-conference foe Susquehanna at 4:30 p.m.
