The Wilkes University men's tennis team had their first home contest this past Thursday, defeating East Stroudsburg 7-2 to move to 1-0 as a team on the season.
Wilkes began on a good note when
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) won their double match convincingly, 8-3. Wilkes dropped the second match of the day when the Warriors' James and Will Norris defeated
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and
Chris Cozzillio (Harrisburg/Trinity) 9-8 (7-5).
Wilkes bounced back in the final doubles match of the day when
Cesar Leon (Woodhaven, NY/Brooklyn Tech) and
Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) beat their opponents in number two doubles action, putting the team up 2-1.
In singles play, McCollum played in the number three position, defeating Mark Convert 6-1, 6-1. Next was Katz in the sixth position, who extended the Colonel lead to 4-1 with his win over Zach Ontell 6-4, 6-2.
The winning match of the day was performed by Leon from the number one position. He defeated Will Norris 6-2, 6-1 to put Wilkes up 5-1. Cozzillio then beat Seth Heller 6-1, 6-4 from the fifth position, and Nolt defeated Jared Rosenberg 6-1, 6-1 in the number two position.
Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) then fell in the last match of the evening, 6-4, 6-4 to James Norris of East Stroudsburg.
With the win the Colonels being their year 1-0 as a team, and will look to continue their success when they participate in the Bucknell Tournament on Oct. 3-4.
