Box Score
The Wilkes University men's soccer team hosted cross-town rival King's College on Wednesday, and after 110 minutes of riveting soccer the game ended in a 1-1 tie, the first for each squad.
The game began with offensive pressure by both teams, as two Wilkes shots hit off the post within the first twenty minutes. In the 33rd minute, just moments after he had been subbed into the game, freshman
Josh Olzinski (Nanticoke/Nanticoke) dribbled through multiple Monarch defenders and found senior
Greg Miller (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood) in front of the goal as he headed it in for the first score of the game. The period ended with Wilkes up, 1-0.
In the second frame King's increased their offensive tenacity, and after repeated shot attempts finally scored when George Genco found Joe Bender for his 14th goal of the year, tying up the score and sending the game into overtime.
In the first overtime Wilkes had a golden opportunity when a deflected ball found
Joe Brennan (Oakdale, CT/Montville) in front of the Monarch goal, but a diving save by Andrew O'Shura prevented the freshman from ending the game.
In the second overtime King's fired three shots on goal, but all were saved by junior goalkeeper
Kaleb Smith (Beavertown, Pa./Medd-West).
In the game Wilkes shot 25 times while the Monarch got off 18 shots of their own. Smith had five saves for the Colonels, and O'Shura record six for King's.
With the tie Wilkes moves to 6-8-1 (2-2-1) on the season, and will look to keep their Freedom Conference tournament hopes alive when they head to Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley on Saturday, Oct. 24. That game will begin at 2:30 p.m.
