The Wilkes University women's soccer team traveled to Purchase, N.Y. on Tuesday to take on Manhattanville in the first round of the Freedom Conference playoffs. The Lady Colonels came into the game as the number four seed with a regular season record of 7-8-3 (3-2-2), while the Valiants boasted the number one seed and a record of 16-1-1 (7-0).
Wilkes played the Valiants earlier in the season at Purchase, falling by a score of 3-0 in a game that the Lady Colonels only took five shots in. In their second match-up the game ended in similar fashion, as Manhattanville defeated the Lady Colonels by a final score of 4-0.
It didn't take long for either team to score, as in the seventh minute the Valiants took a 1-0 lead when an accidental own goal entered the Wilkes keep.
Eight minutes later the Valiants scored again on a goal by Cybil Robinson, assisted by Holly Nonis and Bailey Flood. In the 32nd minute Manhattanville broke the Lady Colonels defense once more when Kathryn Moore scored on a free kick, putting the Valiants up 3-0 going into the break.
Wilkes fired four shots in the first period, two of which were on goal on shots by
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) and
Julissa Reed (Coal Township, Pa./Shamokin), but both were saved by Valiant goalie Ali Bromson.
In the second period the Valiants kept constant pressure on Wilkes goalkeeper
Brooke Keister (Penns Creek, Pa./Midd-West). Keister made multiple saves, but Manhattanville finally pierced the Lady Colonel defense for its fourth score of the game in the 81st minute on a goal by Moore.
In the game Wilkes fired nine shots to Manhattanville's 21. Six of the Lady Colonel shots were on goal, three by Reed and three by Hallowell, but all were saved. Goalies
Sarah Shetler (Pequea, Pa./Penn Manor) and Keister combined for eight saves for the Lady Colonels.
With the loss the Lady Colonels end their season with a 7-9-3 record.
