ASTON – The Wilkes University men's tennis team opened the 2008-09 spring season in fine fashion, taking an 8-1 win over Neumann. The Colonels improved to 4-0 on the year after winning three matches earlier this fall.
The Colonels got off to a quick 3-0 start after winning all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position, the tandem of Chris Cozillio and Kyle Ungvarsky (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) took an 8-6 win over David Pfister and Brian Crispin. At No. 2 doubles, Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and Evan Katz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) cruised to an 8-3 win over Dan Harnos and Chris Brown. We McCollum and Jon Rohrbach (Muncy, Pa./Muncy), playing at the No. 3 spot won 8-1 over Steve Klenk and Greg Bridgeman.
In singles action, Nolt took a 6-4, 3-6, 12-10 win over Pfister at the No. 1 spot, while McCollum used a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win over Crispin at the No. 2 spot to give Wilkes a 4-1 advantage.
The bottom half of the lineup was impressive for the Colonels as they all won in straight-sets, including a 6-0, 6-1 win by Ungvarsky at the No. 5 spot and a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot by Rohrbach.
Wilkes will host the spring opener on Wednesday, March 25 when FDU-Florham comes to Edwardsville for a Freedom Conference matchup.
