SALISBURY, Md. – The Wilkes University softball team dropped its final two games of the Seagull Classic, falling to Mary Washington 8-0 and Swarthmore 7-5.
In the first game, Mary Washington's pitcher kept the Lady Colonels at bay offensively, giving up just two hits while striking out seven Wilkes hitters. Shortstop
Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) remained hot with another single, while
Kristy Ordile (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton Regional) picked up the other base hit.
Mary Washington took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before scoring two in the third and three in the fourth. The Eagles would eventually score two more runs in the fifth ending the game due to the eight-run rule.
In the second game, a late comeback fell short as the Lady Colonels could not erase a 5-0 deficit to Swarthmore. The Garnet scored one run in the first before exploding for four more in the second. Stefanelli added two more hits and has now hit safely in four-straight games, including a two-run homer in the fifth. The Lady Colonel shortstop picked up nine hits in the four-game tournament. MeLisa Barcone also added two hits, a pair of doubles, while
Alyssa Ciesla (Branchville, N.J./High Point) went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Wilkes scored a run in the top of the fourth, but two more runs by Swarthmore gave it a 7-1 advantage. Two runs in the top of the fifth cut into the Garnet lead, but a two-run seventh and two more in scoring position came up short.
The Lady Colonels will host their home-opener on Thursday when they host Lycoming in a double header starting at 3 p.m.
