SOFTBALL TEAM DROPS FIRST GAME AGAINST KING’S, WINS SLUGFEST IN SECOND

WILKES-BARRE - King's College used a six-run third inning to propel it to an 8-0 win in the first game before Wilkes scored eight runs in the first inning and eventually won the second game 11-9.

The Lady Colonels were held to just one hit in the first game as starter Lindsey Hoerner struck out five batters and gave up just a single to Erin Plank (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) as she improved to 7-6 on the year.

King's opened with two runs in the bottom of the first when Becky Loring doubled to right center driving in Gretchen Tholen, who reached on a two-out single. The Lady Monarchs would blow the game open with six more runs, five of which were unearned, off three hits including a two-run single by Samantha Hornberger. The Lady Colonels were unable to cut into the lead as the game was ended in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

In the second game, the Wilkes bats came alive as it banged out 11 hits including a two-run homer by Kristy Ordile (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton Regional). Ordile went 3-for-4 with five RBI and a run scored in the win. Her round-tripper was part of an eight run first inning.

The Lady Colonels batted around in the inning and picked up six hits before King's notched a run in the bottom of the frame.

Wilkes extended its lead to 10-1 with two more runs in the third thanks to a two-run single to center by Ordile plating Sarah Elliot and Sarah Miller (Wyoming, Pa./Bishop Hoban). Miller and Elliot reached on back-to-back walks to lead off the inning.

The Lady Monarchs made the game interesting with five runs in the fourth after picking up six of their 16 hits in the game. Meaghan Galvin hit a three-run homer to left driving in Shawna Walp and Rachel Zinni. Lauren DeCreny led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on an a Wilkes error. DeCreny finished with three hits and a run scored.

Ordile kept the Lady Monarchs at bay with another RBI single in the fifth to give the Lady Colonels an 11-6 lead, but King's would not go away as it would score three more runs in bottom of the seventh.

Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) came in the relief to pitch the final four innings to hold off the Lady Monarchs picking up her ninth win of the season. 

Wilkes will return home to face Susquehanna in a double header at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
