It took three sets in three of the six singles matches, but the Wilkes University men's tennis team eventually took a 9-0 win over PSU Berks.
The Colonels jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches with
Kyle Ungvarsky (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and
Chris Cozzillio (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) winning 8-1 at the No. 2 spot before
Brian Fanelli (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) won 8-2 at No. 3.
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and
Jon Rohrbach (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot.
In singles play, Ungvarsky, playing in his final home match of his career, won in fine fashion, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot over Andrew Miller to give the Colonels a 4-0 lead. McCollum was nearly as efficient with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position over Brendan Penn which clinched the victory for the Colonels.
Rohrbach, playing at the No. 6 spot, took a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set win over Steve Uetz before
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) made it 7-0 after his 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 tie-break win over Andrei Bacalu at the No. 1 position. Katz and Cozzillio would take three sets to win their matches as well, but Katz won the third set tie break 10-3 before Cozzillio won his 10-4.
The win improves the Colonels to 13-1 on the year and will play cross town rival King's at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Edwardsville.
