WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's tennis team concluded their regular season on a high note on Saturday, defeating Freedom Conference foe King's College 7-2.
The defending Freedom Conference Champions end their regular season with a 14-1 overall record and 7-1 mark in the conference.
Wilkes started the afternoon by taking two-of-three double matches.
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) downed Tim Carroll and Jonathan Ferrie at third doubles 8-0.
Kyle Ungvarsky (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and
Chris Cozzillio (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) followed with ab 8-1 win at second doubles over Blake Bonser/David Kaluzavich, before the Monarchs answered with an 8-5 win at first doubles as Jonathan Hand and Povl Schmidt beat the tandem of
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and
Jon Rohrbach (Muncy, Pa./Muncy).
In singles play, the Colonels took five-of-six matches with the lone win for King's coming at second singles where Bonser beat Katz 6-2, 6-2. Nolt beat Hand at first singles 6-1, 6-2, McCollum beat Schmidt 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, Ungvarsky defeated Kaluzavich 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot, Cozzillio was victorious over Carroll 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles, while Rohrbach rounded out the scoring by edging Marco Stallone 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 at sixth singles.
The Colonels will now look to defend their MAC title next weekend when they host the Team Championships starting at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
