SOFTBALL TEAM COMES UP BIG IN SWEEP OVER MANHATTANVILLE

4/18/2009 6:03:16 PM

game one   game two

Down to their last two outs in the bottom of the seventh and down by three runs, the Lady Colonels rallied for four runs capped off by a Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) two-run single lifting them to a 5-4 win over Manhattanville in the first game. The momentum would carry over to the second game as they completed the sweep on senior day with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

Manhattanville starter Samantha Howe silenced the Lady Colonel bats for most of the first game, allowing just one hit in the first five innings. The Valiants scored a run in the first inning before adding three more in the fourth.

Wilkes strung together three hits in the sixth inning, including an RBI single to right field scoring MeLisa Bracone (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) to break up the shutout.

The rally would continue in the seventh as Alyssa Ciesla (Branchville, N.J./High Point) started the inning by reaching on a Manhattanville error. Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) would follow with a one-out single to center before Sarah Miller (Wyoming, Pa./Bishop Hoban) loaded the bases with a single to center as well. Bracone would cut the lead in half after she reached on a walk, allowing Ciesla to score from third. Colleen Labor (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) grounded out to the shortstop, but was deep enough to allow Kaitlyn Kormanik (Johnstown, Pa./Richland), who pinch ran for Saltzer, to score from third. Stefanelli would pick up her second and third RBI on the day on her single to center scoring both Bracone and Miller for the game-winner.

Wilkes starter Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) picked up both wins on the day, pitching a complete game in the first, allowing three earned runs off nine hits while striking out six. She would pitch the final 3.2 scoreless innings of the second game in relief where she gave up two hits while striking out two to improve to 11-5 on the year.

The Lady Colonels hot streak would continue in the second game as they opened the first inning with three runs off two hits and took advantage of a Manhattanville error which proved to be enough the rest of the way.

Bracone led off the game with a single up the middle before Sarah Elliott (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) walked. Stefanelli reached on an infield error allowing Bracone to score from second. Kathy Dalton (Neptune, N.J./St. Rose) picked up her first of two RBI in the game after driving in Elliott on a fielder's choice while Ciesla hit an RBI single to left plating Stefanelli.

Wilkes would tack on another run in the bottom of the third on a solo shot to left field by Dalton, her fourth of the year.

Maureen Pelot (Kirkville, N.Y./Chittenango) started the game in the circle for the Lady Colonels, tossing 3.1 innings where she gave up one run off three hits while striking out three.

The pair of wins evened Wilkes' record at 15-15 but more importantly improved its record to 9-5 in Freedom Conference play. They have little time to rest as they travel to Scranton to face Marywood in a double header starting at 1 p.m.
