SCRANTON – Marywood University took a 4-2 win in the opener and got six unearned runs in one inning to rally for a 9-8 win in the nightcap as the Pacers took a doubleheader from Wilkes University Sunday afternoon.
In the first game, the Lady Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) hit an RBI single to center plating
MeLisa Bracone (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East), who led off the inning with a walk.
The lead would not last long as the Pacers battled back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. The would tack on another run in the second while holding Wilkes scoreless the rest of the way until Bracone doubled to left center in the top of the seventh to score
Keelia Mailander (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff).
Bracone and Stefanelli were the bulk of the offense in the first game as they picked up three of the team's six hits and both drove in a run.
The second game saw the Lady Colonels out-hit Marywood 11-9, but a six-run sixth by the Pacers proved to be the difference in the game. Two errors in the frame made all six runs unearned.
The Pacers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on one hit, but Wilkes would tie the game in the third after Bracone hit a run-scoring double before
Kristy Ordile (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton Regional) hit an RBI single to center.
In the fourth inning,
Kathy Dalton (Neptune, N.J./St. Rose) hit a one-out triple to center and would eventually come around to score on an
Erin Plank (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) fielder's choice to give Wilkes a 3-2 advantage. The Lady Colonels would extend their lead with two runs in the fifth thanks to a Stefanelli two-run double to right.
Trailing 9-5 going into the top of the seventh, Wilkes pounded out four hits that included three singles and a double that led to three runs, but left the tying run stranded. Bracone started the rally with a two-out walk before Ordile doubled to left to score Bracone. Stefanelli followed with a single to move Ordile to third before Dalton drove her in with a single to left. Plank would keep the rally going with a single to left to drive in Stefanelli, but she was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.
Wilkes fell to 15-17 on the year while the Pacers improved to 23-8.
